GREEN DIVISION FINAL 2023: Vader’s Raiders vs Thunder & Lightning
September 18th provided the Green Division with the perfect temperatures at 68 degrees and some cloud cover for a Championship game and a Consolation game. Jim Knudsen’s Vader’s Raiders were taking on Bob Westlake’s Thunder and Lightning.
As expected, the two teams played a hard-fought battle that remained tied at 6-6 for several innings. The game turned when big John Goerzen pitches shut down the Raider’s top six top hitters. Coupled with Dave Lariviere’s speed on the bases bringing home the go ahead runs. And followed by an impenetrable defense and solid performance from their bench, the Thunder and Lightning were able to close it out with a 9-6 win late in the game.
In Green Division we come to have fun. Therefore, the two teams left out were playing for bragging rights and a hand shake from the convenor. Mario Farina’s team the aptly named Wise Guys showed up in Hawaiian shirts. This too was another evenly matched game for most of the innings with the Wise Guys leading 7-5. But a solid 5 run inning by Mike Patterson’s Green Sox would find them doubling the Wise Guys 14-7 in the end.
The 2023 season was a lot of fun with some new players and new talent. While all the teams had their ups and downs, we are fortunate to have the managers we did. We tip our hats to the winning team, Bob Westlake’s Thunder and Lightning.
